A pioneer and leader in speech and language research.
UCLL’s research has a rich history of contributing to the knowledge base in language and literacy. Currently the Center is engaged in four research projects:
- Aphasia Research Project: Our research at UMAP is focused on improving understanding of the efficacy of intensive therapy schedules for adults with varying severities of chronic aphasia. We are assessing ecologically valid assessment measures to capture change in chronic aphasia as well as providing information on the effectiveness of varying types of therapy for clients with different severities of aphasia.
- Nonmainstream Dialect Project: We are studying the development of oral language for classroom purposes, especially the challenges faced by speakers of nonmainstream dialects.
- African American English Project: Our research has focused intensively on African American students and the role of strong oral language skills to academic achievement.
- Pragmatic Language Disorders Project: We are continuing to examine language intervention strategies for young children with language disorders with social-interactional and behavioral consequences.
