Our Preschool and Communication Therapy (PACT) program at the University of Michigan is one of a small number of clinical service programs around the country offering language and literacy therapy to very young children on an intensive intervention schedule. PACT was created in 2005, in part, as a response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s launching of a national campaign titled Learn the Signs. Act Early. Their message is to encourage pediatricians to identify and diagnose young children with suspected developmental problems as early as 24 months.

PACT is a small program, enrolling only 3-5 new children, ranging in age from 18 to 36 months, at a time. Children who have language impairments that are pragmatically based– affecting their abilities to interact with others, are good candidates for this program. PACT is committed to providing state-of-the-art, evidence-based, high-quality, intensive intervention for young children with language and literacy problems. We strive to accomplish the following:

  • build verbal and nonverbal communication, symbolic play, and joint attention skills
  • integrate parents into the intervention team to facilitate the child’s use of emerging skills in natural environments
  • be respectful of home and cultural values and honor individual differences
  • teach age-appropriate preschool participation skills and emergent reading and writing abilities
  • decrease challenging behaviors by helping parents manage environmental stressors and by developing positive and effective alternative communication forms to replace inappropriate interactive behaviors

Each child is given an individual assessment one week prior to the start of the session.

PACT is designed to present authentic classroom and naturalistic play contexts for the delivery of intervention services. The intervention schedule involves 2.5 hours of intervention per day, 4 days per week, for 6 weeks, resulting in a total of 60 hours of therapy. PACT is staffed by two professional speech-language pathologists, a music therapist, teaching assistant, and volunteers. At least one parent is required to attend, participating in therapy observations of the intervention, and weekly educational seminars.

"Thank you UCLL and PACT staff for introducing our son to this wonderful opportunity called learning! My son's Early On program provides an opportunity most Fridays to come and play for an hour and his FSC comes out 3-4 times a month. My son has made more progress in just the four weeks we have attended PACT than he has the entire duration of his Early On experience which he started when he was 18 months old. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. We have learned so much in such little time it has been worth every penny!"
