University Center for the Development of the Language and Literacy (UCLL)

The University Center for the Development of Language and Literacy is proud to announce the Preschool Language and Play Program (PLPP), a new intensive speech-language therapy program for young children.

This program has been modeled after our highly successful Preschool and Communication Therapy Program (PACT), which emphasizes the importance of play-based intervention within a natural setting.

In the Preschool Language and Play Program, children will be matched with another child who has similar goals for language, play, and social skills. Each child will receive 30 minutes of individual therapy and 30 minutes of therapy in a small group setting with another child. Individualized goals will be targeted within both settings, and age-appropriate social interactions will also be addressed with the small group.

Each session will include the following elements:

  • Play-based intervention in a naturalistic setting
  • Multi-sensory approach with movement, social/turn-taking, snack, and sensory activities
  • Combination of individual and group goals to address receptive, expressive, and social language skills
  • One-on-one support within the group setting
To be eligible for the program, children should be between the ages of 24 and 48 months, and have one or more of the following:
  • A limited speaking vocabulary
  • A delay in the ability to follow one- or two-step directions
  • A delay in demonstrating pretend play and/or in stringing several actions together
  • A delay in sharing interests with other peers or adults (joint attention)
