PACT Program Description

Preschool And Communication Therapy (PACT) offers language and literacy therapy to very young children in a group setting on an intensive intervention schedule. A typical 6-week session enrolls only 3-6 children, ranging in age from 18 to 36 months. PACT is designed to present authentic classroom and naturalistic play contexts for the delivery of intervention services. The intervention schedule consists of 2.5 hours of intervention per day, 4 days per week, for 6 weeks, resulting in a total of 60 hours of therapy. Children receive 55 hours of therapy in the group classroom setting and 5 hours of individual therapy with a certified speech-language pathologist.

PACT is staffed by two professional speech-language pathologists, a music therapist, teaching assistant, and volunteers. At least one parent is required to attend and participate in observations of the intervention and weekly educational seminars. Children who have language impairments that are pragmatically based– affecting their abilities to interact with others– are good candidates for this program.

PACT is committed to providing state-of-the-art, evidence-based, high-quality, intensive intervention for young children with language and literacy difficulties. We strive to accomplish the following:
  • build verbal and nonverbal communication, symbolic play, and joint attention skills
  • integrate parents into the intervention team to facilitate the child’s use of emerging skills in natural environments
  • be respectful of home and cultural values and honor individual differences
  • teach age-appropriate preschool participation skills and emergent reading and writing abilities
  • decrease challenging behaviors by helping parents manage environmental stressors and by developing positive and effective alternative communication forms to replace inappropriate interactive behaviors
