Clients and families typically have many questions when deciding if the University Center for the Development of Language and Literacy offers the right program for language and literacy intervention. We hope the following answers to frequently asked questions will be helpful as you consider enrolling yourself or your child in our services. Please contact us if you have further questions.
- How long is an evaluation? What will the evaluation include?
• A language evaluation lasts 2-3 hours.
• Skills addressed include receptive and expressive language, language processing abilities, articulation, and a hearing screening.
• Phonological awareness abilities, reading, writing, and spelling can also be addressed. This will add 1-2 hours to the assessment.
- How do I schedule an evaluation?
• Call the Center at (734) 764-8440 to receive an application packet. Applications are also available on this website.
• We will call to schedule the evaluation after we receive a completed application.
- Do you work with individuals who have dyslexia?
• Yes, our clinicians are experienced in diagnosing dyslexia and addressing the specific needs of children, youth, and young adults who struggle to read.
- What other populations/disorders do you see at your Center?
• Our clinicians work with individuals who may have an auditory processing disorder, autism spectrum disorder, social language disorder, hearing loss, articulation disorder, ADD/ADHD, apraxia, specific learning disabilities, and a variety of other disorders.
- Who will be working with the client, and what qualifications does that person have?
• Our clinicians are Master’s level Speech-Language Pathologists who are certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
• Clients may also be seen by Clinical Fellows or student interns under the close direction of a certified clinician.
- How often or for how long will we need to receive services?
• Depending on the results of the evaluation, clients attend sessions between one and four times per week.
• A need to continue therapy will be addressed periodically by the clinician.
- Do you work with very young children?
• Yes, we work with children as young as 18 months of age in our Preschool and Communication Therapy (PACT) Program and in individual sessions.
- Will therapy be conducted individually or in a group?
• Group programs include Preschool and Communication Therapy (PACT) Program, Kindergarten-First Grade Starter, and Teen Connections.
• Other sessions are conducted in a one-on-one setting with a Master’s level Speech-Language Pathologist.
- Will you accept my insurance?
• UCLL does not participate directly with insurance; however, your insurance may provide reimbursement. Check with your insurance provider to determine your benefits for speech/language evaluations and intervention.
• Full payment is required at the time of service.
- Where are you located? Will I be able to park at your facility?
• We are located at 1111 East Catherine Street in the Victor Vaughan Building.
• Valet parking is available free of charge and is located on the west side of the building.
