Effective study and organization skills lead to school success
Study and organization skills become increasingly important as
children progress in school. Effective study and organization
skills support school success.
Although classroom teachers sometimes teach these skills,
students are often left on their own to figure out ways to organize
classroom materials and study for tests. These are a few of
the study and organization strategies that we teach students at our
Center:
-
Get ready! Create a place for studying at home. It
should be free of clutter and distractions. Make sure the
student has all the materials needed at the study station,
including pencils and paper.
-
Get set! Before starting to read from a textbook, preview
what will be read. Look at the titles, heading, vocabulary,
pictures, graphs, and captions. Make some predictions about
what you will learn through the reading. Previewing is
important for helping students to remember and understand what is
read.
-
Go! Devise a mnemonic to help with memorization when
studying for a test. For example, the mnemonic “ROY G. BIV”
would help a student remember the colors of the rainbow: Red,
Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet.
When studying a particular topic, try to explain the topic to a
peer or parent. This is an excellent activity to help students
acknowledge what they know while recognizing what they still need
to study.
